January 2024

From the President...

Happy New Year everyone! It is time to dust off 2023 as a year where many of the Club goals were accomplished and begin the transition to new challenges that lie ahead.

If you are not ready for 2024 then you can wait until the Chinese New Year starts, which is Feb 10, 2024. It will be the Year of the Dragon. But why wait, let us just welcome 2024 and start breaking our New Year resolutions now, without delay!

Now that the club redesign is complete, we will focus on making improvements to the administrative side of our operations. There are at least three areas I am hoping to focus on in the coming months: 1- Bringing members back to the club. 2- Better transparency and cohesion between our SIGs. and 3- Improvement in monitor training and support.

Bringing members back to the club

Now that we have a great, functional club with resources to help you become a better photographer, the need to provide remote access for SIG meetings and our events has diminished. You can now come to the club to access these resources available to you, and we are doing away with Zoom. However, we will still be recording the presentation events and Board meetings for later access on YouTube.

We redesigned the club’s space to give us more flexibility and increase the capacity of our classroom space. We now have a large classroom that will seat 50 people, and a smaller classroom (Ansel Adams room) with a capacity for 15 people. Sconce lights have been added to the classroom, Ansel Adams Room, and the Photo lab. Sconce lights reduce the glare from the computer monitors and the TVs, allowing for better visibility of the screen, yet providing sufficient light to take notes. No more having to have someone get up and turn lights off and on between segments.

Better transparency and cohesion between our SIGs

Our Special Interest Groups are the foundation of the Club's educational activities. Not by design, but just the way things have evolved over the years, they have been operating independently, as though each were in their own silo. Some SIG Coordinators have subscriptions and software that are currently known only to that SIG Coordinator. It is possible that other SIG Coordinators could benefit from the same resource.

The SIGs are now under the overview of the Education Chair, Gene Komaromi. Gene will be meeting with the SIG Coordinators collectively to discuss their needs and plans for 2024. They will share information, and if appropriate, resources. In addition, Special Interest Group Coordinators will be asked to keep the Board updated on a regular basis so that the Board can keep abreast of SIG activities, successes, and needs.

Improvement in monitor training and support

The Board will consider making changes to new monitor training and refresher classes. What I am proposing is that we schedule a training class one day a month for new monitor training. We still need to work out the specifics, but the class will include hands-on demonstrations of the various functions performed by and expected of monitors. This will include storage room procedures, handling of photo paper for printing, a basic overview of the computer software, how to use the printers, scanners and digital copying processes. Also, who to contact to provide more advanced support if a member needs it, and how to access the members who have volunteered to assist with software applications, cameras, and matting.

After the classroom session, the monitors will need to schedule themselves with an experienced monitor for a morning session and a second monitoring session in the afternoon before they can monitor alone. This will give them the opportunity to process through the opening and closing procedures with an experienced monitor. In addition, we strongly encourage monitors to attend refresher training once a year. Refresher training will benefit those who may forget some procedures or are not updated on what changes have occurred while they were away.

So, as we implement and process through these changes, please let me or other Board members know if they are making a difference in improving the club. It is your club, and we want to do what we can to make it work for you.

Lastly, as I reported last month, we will be resuming our traditional Spring Dinner Social this season on April 8th at the Desert Hills auditorium. As we have done in the past, we will include a special multi-media presentation and also hold our Annual Meeting, voting for new Board members and handling any other matters that may be needed. Please mark your calendars and watch for more information soon.

The last monthly installment of my review of Thomas Ang's book, Photography, The Definitive Visual History, is in a separate Book Review article later in the newsletter. You can jump to it here.

Have a great New Year.

As I See It…

A Fine Art Photography Exhibition

by

Sandy Ostroff

Photography Club member and Fine Art Photography SIG leader, Sandy Ostroff, will have his work on exhibition in the Desert Hills Recreation Center lobby from January 3rd to the 31st.

Sandy’s work embodies the concept that a photograph is an amazing thing, magically allowing the viewer to see through another’s eyes. A photograph can capture a moment in time, the image of a loved one or a sight of beauty, triumph, ugliness or pain. It can appeal to our emotions and allow us to experience what the photographer saw and how they interpreted it. This exhibition of Sandy’s photographs will allow the viewer a glimpse of his work and what he sees when he looks through the lens.

Sandy loved the camera from the first time his parents gave him one at the age of six. He loved it so much he graduated college with a degree in photography from Columbia College in Chicago after which he spent 55 years as a professional photographer working for ad agencies, corporations and record companies. His body of work is enormous and varied, from documenting exotic travel for album covers, major magazine ads and billboards, to photographing rock stars, product shots and fashion.

After moving to Green Valley, he began teaching at the Green Valley Photography Club, concentrating on fine art photography and documenting his extensive travel both overseas and in the USA.

Sandy will be hosting an Opening Reception for the exhibition on Friday, January 5th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Desert Hills, a great chance to meet the photographer and explore his photographs on display. Refreshments will be served.

Attention: Photo Lab Users

A Note from the Technical Committee

When doing color-critical work and you want improved visibility on the display, use the sconce lights on the walls to provide reduced ambient room illumination. Switch off the overhead room lighting and turn on the sconce lights, the switch is near the door.

The displays in the Photo Lab have recently been color calibrated. It is critical that you do not make any adjustments on the display, especially brightness, as that will change the color calibration and distort the colors you are working on.

We'll have more on lighting in the Photo Lab in next month's newsletter.

Photo of the Month

The January Photo of the Month is by Kim Holmes. Kim is one of the five Photography Club members winning awards at the recent CPAC juried photography exhibition. Kim took 1st Place with her photo, Sunflower In Pink.

Kim shares with us, "I took this out at Canoa Ranch last year. I had processed it as a B&W but when I printed it, due to an ink issue with my printer, it came out with a pink hue to the background and the whites. I wasn't happy with it at first and didn't plan on entering it, but it grew on me over a few days.  I'm glad now that I kept it. I shoot with a Canon 60D using a Tamron 16-300mm lens. This was shot at 55mm, f6.3, 1/500sec. The title is: "Sunflower in Pink"

Congratulations, Kim! You make us all proud.

The Photo of the Month is chosen from new and archived photos submitted to Sue Ready, the Club's Facebook Coordinator. Keep sending the best of your work to Sue at suready@yahoo.com so we may continue to showcase the refined capabilities of GVR Photography Club membersPhotos should be submitted in .jpg format and please include its title and location. -ed

Library News

Welcome 2024, the Chinese Year of the Dragon. In Chinese mythology the Dragon is a symbol of creativity, innovation, strength, and courage. The Chinese year, which begins February 10, is expected to be a year of potential and opportunity. What better outlook for the GVR Photography Club?

The Library shelves are filled with creative and innovative possibilities — books on software technique, lighting, composition, video/movie making, inspirational photographs by well-known photographers, and more. There also are books to help participants in Photoshop, Black & White, Multi Media, Wildlife and On Assignment SIGs, and in iPhone photography classes.

And don’t judge a magazine by its cover or the issue date. Even one photo, article or ad in those free publications in the magazine rack may be just what you need for inspiration.

If you hear of a book that we can add to the Library, please let me know. If you have books in good condition to donate, do not leave them at the club. Send me an email with the names of the books so that I can check if we already have them and if they are appropriate for our collection.

Happy New Year!

Showtime

Monday 1/8 at 7:00 pm

Welcome to Showtime 2024. My name is Todd Taylor and I am taking over as the coordinator of SHOWTIME after many years of Chuck Hill doing an excellent job hosting the show. Thanks, Chuck!

I kind of feel like when Drew Carey replaced Bob Barker on the Price is Right. They were big shoes to fill but as we have heard many times before, “The Show Must Go On”.

We have an exciting show for you in January, live at the Desert Hills Center. The auditorium will be set up café style with tables and chairs. We'll even have popcorn! But you'll need to BYO beverage of choice. It will be a fun night for all.

Our lineup has several videos from around our beloved town of Green Valley and a few from, well, I don't know, but I guarantee they’re great videos. Besides, where else could you get this great form of entertainment for FREE? Only from your GVR Photography Club. Here's our lineup for January:

  • Garden Club Tour – Joe Jackson
  • Pecan Picking – Doug Stenerson
  • Susanne Park – Kevin May
  • Whirly Gig’s – Paul McCreary

  • Rock Crawl – Kirk Hively
  • Toy Train Museum – Tom Parker
  • Tagging in Tucson – Joe Jackson

  • Butterflies and Moths – Dianne Marr
  • Sphere – Todd Taylor

As I said above, “The Show Must Go On”, and indeed it will, but not without you. We appreciate your attendance at the event, but there is no SHOWTIME without your videos. You can drop off a thumb drive with your show at the Club. Ask the monitor to put it in my file folder and I will return it to you. Also, if you have the Filemail app, you can email them to me at GVRPCShowtime@gmail.com.

If you need help putting together a presentation we have people ready, willing and able to assist you. Better yet, come to our amazing Multi Media SIG on Monday mornings where we answer people’s questions, give a few suggestions and help them become better video editors for themselves and those viewing. Come join us, we’re really a fun group.

In the meantime, we do hope to see you at Desert Hills!

Photography, The Definitive Visual History by Thomas Ang

This final installment highlights the Digital Age, from 2000 to about 2014, when Thomas Ang's book, Photography, The Definitive Visual History, was first published.

During this period, the personal computer impacted the film processing industry. Digital photography developed as more reliable software became available, allowing for processing to keep pace with photography.

While this was good for photographers, who rejoiced in minimal costs, it brought many of their suppliers to the verge of bankruptcy. Photography stretched in every direction as personal photography increased and photographs made by machine escalated. Surveillance security cameras, aerial and land surveys, and satellites became major producers of photography. And as costs fell, we took more pictures of the minutiae of our lives to record major milestones.

During the 1990’s digital cameras were produced in numerous shapes and sizes. This new technology came of age in 2000 with the production of the Canon D30.

By the 2000s, Photoshop, the trade name registered to Adobe Systems, Inc. for its image manipulation software, had become a verb and entered the language meaning to “alter, transform, or fabricate an image.” The response to image manipulation did not always receive a warm welcome. Photojournalists began to accept some retouching, which became more apparent when the Swedish photographer Paul Hansen won the World Press Photo contest in 2013.

By 2000, advances in wireless phone technologies converged with sensor and camera miniaturization to produce the first practical cellular mobile phone with a camera. It was the J-SHO4 made by Sharp and sold by the J-Phone network in Japan. The camera captured a 110,000-pixel image which could be viewed on color display and forwarded over the cellular network to other phones.

Photographers first turned up their noses at the quality of camera phone images. But the camera phone seized the public’s imagination, and by 2003 more camera phones were bought than digital cameras. By 2005 Nokia became the best-selling brand of camera by virtue of being the cellphone market leader.

In 2009 the iPhone 3GS was introduced, thus marking a major change. Thanks to its use of wavefront coding, the images were surprisingly sharp and detailed. The public now have cameras in their smartphones that are far better than the basic digital cameras. By 2013 about one in five people in the world owned a smartphone.

Widely equipped with camera phones and vastly outnumbering news photographers, the public is now in a far better position to capture on-the-spot news events than the biggest press corps. This marked a major shift in the balance between the news photographer and news consumer. This also led to the undercover photographer, a person with a camera phone, indistinguishable from hundreds of ordinary citizens.

As sports became more newsworthy greater technologies were needed to speed up delivery to newspapers. By 2010 photographers could use their cameras to send files wirelessly to editors who could select images to transmit to agency headquarters and clients. In the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, each major news agency oversaw more than 60,000 images daily. They selected and filed about 23,000 images per day with an average time of just 180 seconds from capture to worldwide distribution.

With the Minolta 7000 introduction in 1985, autofocus became the template for all subsequent autofocus systems. Allied with high-performing lenses, modern systems can hold an object in focus traveling more than 186 mph toward the camera.

The telephoto revolution made it possible to portray nature better in photographs than in the wild. Steadily improving technology meant that photographers could use lenses of 600mm and of greater focal length.

Advances in photography has taken us to the ends of the universe. Some of the first digital pictures were of stars, made by light that took millions of years to reach Earth. The first image of the Moon was made as early as 1840 by John William Draper, from New York. Five years later Leon Foucault took the first picture of the sun, using an exposure of 1/60th of a second. The light from the image took around eight minutes to cross the 93 million miles between the sun and earth. Just over a century later images were being captured with light that had taken billions of years to reach us. The Hubble Space Telescope, launched into orbit in 1990 was a major advance for astronomy. In 1993, astronauts installed a corrector plate that greatly improved its range. The deepest view was obtained in 2012. It amounted to an exposure time of 2 million seconds (23 days). Hubble picked up dim light emitted from the galaxies 13.2 billion years ago – just half a billion years after the birth of the universe.

This is the final instalment on Thomas Ang's book, Photography, The Definitive Visual History. I hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed bringing it to you.

A final thought… We can be certain that people will photograph as long as they have greater access to cameras. Photography has been shaped by technology and will continue to advance in the future. The greatest influence on photography has not been the digital camera, but its reincarnation in the form of the smartphone and mirrorless cameras. We, at the Photography Club, must be aware of the changes as they begin to take shape so we can provide the services and support that will keep our membership current with changes that help them enrich and enjoy their photography ventures.
