September 2024

From the President...

Greetings from Wisconsin! My wife Sandy and I are full time in Green Valley, but we do love to get out on adventures. We are now in the 3rd week (of 12) in our RV.  The photo is of me and our dog, Virga, at a Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Pepin, Wisconsin.

After departing Arizona on our way to Nebraska we passed through four states in one day – NM, TX, OK and NE. I always like to find a few unique places – one near us now is the World’s Largest Penny in WoodruffWisconsin! I really enjoy the more unique parts of our country - forts, museums, brewpubs, BBQ joints and other oddball places while Sandy enjoys more relaxing scenic areas.

I look forward to hearing about your adventures and seeing your photos of people, travel and scenery back at the club.

Kirk Hively, President

Mystery Solved!

We’ve all stared at the large wall-mounted TV screen high on the wall of the Photography Club and watched a series of club members’ fantastic images scroll by, one after another, and wondered, “How can I get my photos to show on this display? Where do I send them? Do they have to be signed? Do I have to worry about things like size and resolution of the photos?”

Well…….. Ron Stein and Tom Parker have just put together a neat instruction flyer, shown below. They will be sending out an eBlast with a link for you to print out your own copy. Copies will also be available at the monitors desk at the Club, and a resource page with these instructions will be added to the website soon. Mystery solved!

Keep Our Facebook Page in Mind

Whether you're on vacation or just enjoying the Arizona summer, be sure to remember to send me your favorite photos so I can post them on the Club's Facebook page. Those photos are also where I get to choose the Photo of the Month featured  in the newsletter each month. Your photo could be chosen next!

Don't forget the GVR Photography Club when on vacation. Share your best photos with us!

Sue Ready, Facebook Coordinator

Photo of the Month

The September Photo of the Month is by Jack Maddox, a back yard wildlife shot with an "In the Moment" characteristic of street photography.

Jack explains, "I just happened to look out the back sliders and saw the hawk on the birdbath. I went to get my camera, and when I got back, he was having a conversation with Mr. Frog.

I used a Nikon D3300 with a 55 to 300mm lens and used Photoshop Elements to crop the picture and add a bit of a vignette."

Congratulations, Jack!

The Photo of the Month is chosen from new and archived photos submitted to Sue Ready, the Club's Facebook Coordinator. Keep sending the best of your work to Sue at suready@yahoo.com so we may continue to showcase the refined capabilities of GVR Photography Club membersPhotos should be submitted in .jpg format and please include its title and location. -ed

It’s summertime and the living is easy. The Photography Club is planning late fall and winter activities and should have some definite information to share early in September.

Right now, I'm laid back, feet in the water, sitting on the sand when I should have my camera in hand. So, I’m going to practice what I preach; I’m going to take some time to do a little photography and I encourage you to do the same. Get that camera or phone out and shoot away.  I’ll try to arrange a “Show and Tell” session in the fall where participants can share their “What I Photographed During the Summer” results.

I also have one summer learning experience to suggest. Spend a little time on the repository of all knowledge, YouTube. Search for some photographic topic that piques your interest, watch it, and hopefully learn something new. Try some topics like portraits, composite photography, or landscape photography.

Library News

Our Library is an asset to the GVR Photography Club. It is open the same hours as the Club — currently Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - noon, does not require a library card, has no fines for overdue books, and there are dozens of free magazines.

On the shelves are books in many categories of photography: Black & White Photography, Making Art/Creativity, Composition, Special Collections, Digital, Equipment, IPhone Photography, Lighting, Movie/Video, Nature, Photographers, Portrait, Photoshop, Street Photography, Photojournalism, Software, Studio and Wildlife. Plus, the Miscellaneous shelf houses the books which do not fit into a specific category.

Showtime

Keep Shooting for Next Season

Greetings to all,

As summer comes to a close I’m sure you have a lot of photos and/or videos you have shot these past few months. With some cooler months ahead, now is a good time to start editing photos and preparing them to show this coming Showtime season. All of our SIGS provide great help on improving your image/videos no matter what they may be.

Have a great September and remember you don’t have to wait until November to submit videos for this year’s Showtime program. You can use WeTransfer or Filemail free of charge to send them to gvrpcshowtime@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Todd Taylor, Showtime Host

Travelogue

Closed for the Season

Thanks to all our Travelogue contributors this past season.

To all our members, I ask that you keep Travelogue in mind if you travel this summer so you can share your travels with us. Travelogues should be less than 20 minutes, saved on a thumb drive and left in the Travelogue folder at the Club. We all look forward to seeing another set of your exciting and enjoyable Travelogues starting in November.

If you have questions, please contact me at 970-596-1505 or email me here.

Paul McCreary, Travelogue Coordinator

Speaker Series

Starting in November

Hello all club members.  As the summer starts to wind down, I hope you have enjoyed your time either here in Green Valley or wherever you escape to.

The speaker series is slowly coming together.  A club member will be presenting in November and I have someone coming from the Tucson Wildlife Center to speak to us in January.  Please keep the speaker series in mind when you get back in town.

I look forward to seeing all of you.

Kim Holmes, Speaker Series Coordinator

Field Trips

Planning for Next Season

First, let me apologize for not keeping my promise of summer field trips. When I was home in May I tore my meniscus and did a couple of other things to my knee. I spent the remainder of my summer on the couch with my leg elevated. I am doing everything I can to get back in shape for this season.

As I said in the August newsletter, I really need your help. Last year's success was due to an unbelievably small, but very dedicated group of trip leaders. To continue with our record number of trips we need members to step up and volunteer to lead our field trips. Most, if not all, of the trips have already been accomplished in the past, so it’s just a matter of picking the date, contacting the venue, and enjoying the day.

Our next Field Trip Committee meeting will be at 2:00 p.m. on September 4th to set up next season’s October through May calendar. Please feel free to join us and help make this the best field trip season ever!

As always, If you have any questions, ideas for future trips or want to participate in our Field Trip activities, please contact me,

Monica E. Parker, Field Trip Facilitator

We are always looking for additional monitors. Help us provide all the benefits the Club offers to its members. As you take advantage of the Club's activities and its extensive digital processing equipment, consider sharing the effort in providing these services by volunteering as a monitor.  You are not expected to know how to use the equipment. Training takes about three hours.
