Julia Margaret Cameron: Scandalous Victorian Photography

The Speaker on January 21, 2021 will be Susan Hill. Susan is not a photographer herself but has tremendous admiration for the creativity and patience of those who are and for the beauty of artful photography.

Julia Margaret Cameron was 48 years old in 1863 when she was given a camera as a gift. She fell in love with photography, becoming an innovator in the use of soft focus and dramatic lighting in her portraits of famous men of her era. She also enjoyed setting up and photographing illustrative allegories; it is her photos of children that we will discuss as “scandalous.”

The link to the Zoom presentation will be sent with your registration.

To attend this event, you must be a member of GVR.

    Nature/Bird Photography: Sweetwater   Wetlands/Columbus Park

    Cost: $12

Sweetwater Wetlands is the top birding area in the Tucson metro area. This water-rich streamside riparian zone supports a huge variety of wildlife, including dragonflies, raccoons, hawks, bobcats and dozens of other species that make the wetlands their full- or part-time home.  Paths are flat and either decomposed granite or gravel.

If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. A hat and water are suggested.  Bring your lunch so you can spend as much time as you want observing birds and activities that weren't visible when the reeds were very high.

Meet at the Camera Club at 8 AM for carpooling.  If you don't feel comfortable carpooling, you can drive yourself.  We will leave for Sweetwater at 8:15 AM.  Please wear your GVR Camera Club badge if you have one.

Because the Camera Club is still not officially open, GVR is requiring that every person participating in club's field trips must sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  Please bring your signed waiver with you when we gather for the trip. GVR is requiring that we provide them with the signed waivers as well as a list of field trip attendees.

    Waiver for Club Excursions 01052021.pdf

Linda Gregory will be our leader.  For questions call Linda at 520-625-5121 or email at lsgregaz@gmail.com.

To cancel your registration contact Field Trip Facilitator at philr@iname.com.  Last date for refund is January 18, 2021.

    NOTICE:

All participants need to be responsible for an assessment of their mobility and health issues relating to field trips. Some trips may not be appropriate, but you must make that determination. However, the trip leader may deny participation in a specific field trip to anyone deemed not suitably prepared or able to walk with the group.

The club strives to provide several field trips specifically designed for members with physical limitations.

In order to participate in this event, you must be a member of the GVR Camera Club and GVR.

    Don’t Miss It

Your SHOWTIME coordinator hopes that you enjoyed participating in the January SHOWTIME event at the New York Broadway Theater.  Get set – because the February 1 SHOWTIME will be held on the moon, yes the moon!  To prepare for that three day space rocket trip you will first virtually drive to World View near the Tucson airport where you will ascend to 100,000 feet in a capsule that holds six paying customers and two crew members.   With a ‘Para foil’ you will make a soft landing at a predetermined site.  Since we have more than 6 members you may have to wait in line for a while.  The normal price for this is $75,000 but camera club members get in free.  After a few days you will travel to Cape Canaveral for your trip to the moon where SHOWTIME will be presented.  Shows will include a train ride, a look at faces from different perspectives, contributions from the multi-media SIG group, and much more.  The $150 million ticket price for the ride is waived by NASA and SpaceX as they are desperately looking for volunteers for this experimental ride.

And by the way….we are in desperate need of programs for our monthly Showtime presentations.  It is easy – take some of your photos from a field trip or other event and put them into a program.  Use ProShow Gold/Producer or some other application to assemble your photos and add music of your choice.

Gammons Gulch Movie Set and Museum

    Trip Cost $30

    Please read Covid-19 protocols below.

Take a trip back in time to the days of the old west as you walk down the streets of an old west town.

Gammons Gulch, a western town and movie set, was built by Jay and Joanne Gammons.  It includes a saloon, blacksmith shop, jail, assay office, church, gallows, barber shop, and much more.  The buildings are not just facades; they are actual buildings with vintage furniture, dishes, lightning, tools, etc from the territorial era.  It is truly a museum.

Gammons Gulch has served as a setting for may western movies, western themed weddings and other events, with the surroundings and settings meeting the specifications of the actual decor of the time.  This is a great opportunity for Black and White Photography.

We will start with a guided tour of the town after which you'll be able to take photos of the interior and exterior settings at your leisure.  Pictures may be taken for personal use only.

There is no food served at Gammons Gulch so bring water and a picnic lunch.  There is a nice picnic area or you can eat you lunch in the saloon.

It is highly suggested that you wear closed-toed shoes. brimmed hats and use sunscreen.

A little imagination is all you need to complete this memorable "step back in time" experience.  You'll marvel at the detail and authenticity that went into the building of this movie set and museum.

Meet at the Camera Club at 8:15 AM for instructions and departure at 8:30 AM  to Gammons Gulch. Please bring your signed GVR waiver form to give to the guide.

Contact the Danny Valenzuela at 602-568-5759 or dvsundevil@gmail.com with any questions.

If you need to cancel please contact the Field Trip Facilitator at philr@iname.com. We may have people on the wait list to take your place.

Due to confirmation required for the actors there will be no refunds after February 15th.

    COVID-19 PROTOCOLS:

There will be no carpooling. You must drive your own car. You must wear a mask while on this field trip. All safety protocols will be practiced while at Gammons Gulch.  We will split into two groups while at Gammons Gulch and  lunch will be staggered so one group will eat at 11:30am and the second group no later than 12:30 pm.

Because the Camera Club is still not officially open, GVR is requiring that every person participating in the club's field trips sign a waiver absolving GVR of any liability.  Please bring your signed waiver with you when we gather for the trip. GVR is requiring that we provide them with the signed waivers as well as a list of field trip attendees.
