Ted Fleming Photography, April Meeting Speaker

I’m an ecologist by training and a long-time amateur photographer. I spent most of my career as a Professor of Biology at the University of Miami. My research specialty istropical plant-animal interactions, particularly pollination and seed dispersal mutualisms. I’ve been able to travel extensively in the tropics in my research, always with a camera in tow. But I feel that my photography has really blossomed in the digital age. I’m particularly interested in ‘painterly’ images and usually convert my favorite photos into digital paintings under the influence of artists such as Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keefe, and Maynard Dixon. I have rather eclectic tastes in my subjects but have not done much landscape photography. Given my background as a biologist, I particularly enjoy photographing wildlife, but I also like to photograph people ‘doing interesting things.

As an artist, I am often drawn to images that are visually complex (reflecting my lifelong interest in biological diversity) and colorful. I also seek images that are elegant in their composition or graphic elements. One of my current techniques involves creating photo montages as a way of emphasizing the place of wildlife and people in their natural environments.

I am a former president of Club Camera Tucson and my photographic images have appeared in a variety of local galleries and exhibitions, including Tohono Chul, Tubac Center of the Arts, Dove Mountain Gallery, Ventana Medical Services, and Toscana Gallery. Two of my fine art books (‘Art in the Park’ and ‘Bisbee’) are available in local bookstores.
