    Mondays @ 9:30AM

The Black & White Special Interest Group is a weekly meeting of those club members who enjoy the special qualities of black & white (or more generally called “monochrome”) photography. Members bring their images for viewing and comments by the group.  Discussions on editing techniques, as well as on composition and lighting are also a part of the meeting.
The question might be asked “Why are we interested in black and white images when even the basic point and shoot digital cameras can produce very good color photographs?”  The answer is: there are some images which have more visual impact when rendered in black and white.  These images are those which use the interplay between light and shadows to emphasize texture or shapes within the composition. An example is shown below
Typically, the photographs shown at our SIG have been produced as color images in a digital camera and converted to black and white using one or more of the popular photo editing software packages.

    Fine Art Photography SIG

Several members of the GVR Camera Club have been showing breathtaking artistic photographs that have been eliciting "aaws" from every audience that they've been shown to. For examples of the photos that can be produced with these techniques, click HERE.

I've had numerous requests from members who want to create similar Art Photographs, to offer classes on the techniques used.

In order to satisfy those requests, the GVR Camera Club is launching a new Special Interest Group (SIG) for members who want to "Click it up a Notch" to a photo art form. Sandy Ostroff will be the facilitator for this group.

Any member who is interested in "Photography as an Art Form" is invited to attend. Join the group to explore new ideas and to get excited about photography again.

Please feel free to bring a few samples of any Photo Art that you've done to share as examples

    iMovie On The MAC

iMovie is the free video editing application that comes with all Macintosh computers. These classes are for the first time iMovie user as well as those who have upgraded Operating Systems or have a new Mac, as the new iMovie interface and way of working have changed. There is also a Mobile Version of iMovie for the iPhone and iPad.

Class 1: We will cover the basic interface of iMovie and show various ways to import video into the Events, show how clips are organized and how to start a project. We will select clips for the project and use transitions and titles. Music enhances a project, so we will add background music. As a final touch we will cover making a quick, short and fun Movie Trailer using preset themes.

Class 2: We will work with ways to edit and stabilize video clips. Then we will add still photos into the project. Did you know you could actually record video using the computer camera? This is called “Live Action” and can be used in your video. We will work more with audio; adding music in a different way, detaching audio from a clip to use in another location, adding sound effects and recording voice-overs. In the end we will cover ways to finalize and share videos.

    Instructor: Grace Pitzer

Grace is a retired school teacher and a long term Macintosh user. She has taught a number of iPhoto and iMovie classes and is currently up on their latest versions.

    iPhone Photography

Much of the time, the camera we have with us is our iPhone. It is good for snapshots, but can really take great pictures. This class will go over techniques for taking better photos using the features in the camera. It will also go over all of the editing tools built into the Photos app on your iPhone. There are also many third-party editing apps and cameras apps. The class will look at some of these and demonstrate how they work. This class will only deal with the iPhone, but the techniques for taking good photos can apply to any smartphone.

Hidden Gems of Tubac Field Trip

Trip Cost $2 (Lunch on your own)

We will start at Pancho’s Resource and Design store at the Tubac Golf Resort – opening one hour prior to regular customers just for our field trip.  Pancho’s is located in the historic 100+ year old Otero Barn; the front entrance is flanked by two 50 ft. grain silos.  Adobe walls frame an experience for the senses when you enter.  They have an amazing collection of one-of-a-kind furnishings such as leather chairs, hand carved wooden tables, chests, cabinets, shelves and credenzas and much more.  Every piece provides a flavor of the Sonoran Desert.  There is so much to photograph!

Lunch will follow at the LaCantina Grill next to the golf shop.  Featuring a variety of items including burgers, burritos, wraps, and sandwiches it has shaded tables in a beautiful outdoor environment.  (Lunch plates $7-8, drinks additional.)

Don Spear - "The Command To Look" and More

By popular demand, we have scheduled an encore performance of this class!

On some rare occasions, the GVR Camera Club is able to host a special presentation by a photographer who is a true “Master of Light”. The Club has that opportunity this season with a presentation by Don Spear, a founder of the GVR Camera Club and a worldwide photographer.

Don is going to give information on the greatest photographer that no one has heard of, William Mortensen. Mortensen published a book titled “The Command To Look” with his formula for photographic inspiration. Bird Photography:  Anza Trail around Tumacacori Mission/Hawk Walk in Tubac

    Trip Cost $12

The Park’s lands include rare types of southwestern forest located along the Santa Cruz River. Some bird species found in these and other local habitats are not usually seen in other places in this country, and are part of the reason why visiting southern Arizona is on many birders' bucket lists. The group will travel on fairly level ground throughout the park's varied habitats.

We will then travel to Ron Morris Park in Tubac Every March three species of hawks -- black, gray and zone-tailed -  migrate north on the Santa Cruz River. Tubac is said to be the easiest and most likely place to see them.

The trip will be led by bird and nature expert, Sandy McMahan, who is a long-time teacher and trip leader. Whether you're an expert birder/photographer or a beginner, you will enjoy Sandy's narratives. If you have binoculars, you may want to bring them along. A small notebook and pen or pencil would be useful to record your sightings.

Bring a lunch and be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. A hat and water are suggested.

Meet at the Camera Club at 7:30  AM for carpooling.  We will leave for Tumacacori Mission   at 7:45 AM.

Linda Gregory will be our leader.  For questions call Linda at 520-625-5121 or email at lsgregaz@gmail.com.

Last refund date is February 26th. Last sign up date is February 26th.

    Day Trip to Magdalena, Mexico

    Cost $104

This trip is provided by the Border Community Alliance (BCA). BCA is about bridging the border and fostering community through education, collaboration and cultural exchange. We do this in the Nogales region of Southern Arizona/Sonora Mexico.

    Trip description:

The historic city of Magdalena lies approximately sixty miles south of Nogales, yet it is a different world with colonial buildings and the rustic feel of the vaquero (cowboy) heartland. Father Eusebio Kino (1645-1711) is buried there. This Jesuit missionary is credited with founding some twenty-one churches throughout the Sonoran region, the most famous of which is San Xavier del Bac near Tucson. Beginning near the border in Nogales Mexico, this tour includes an overview of the rich and complex history of the region with stops at Imuris and San Ignacio before proceeding on to Magdalena. Magdalena’s beautiful plaza and memorial to Kino is surrounded by an artful promenade where shoppers stroll in the shaded walkway. The chapel and church are a moving tribute to the faith of the region, architecturally will done. After lunch the tour continues with a visit to a local school and a chance to dialogue about the local context.

We will provide an orientation at the camera club, where you will have a chance to meet your fellow travelers and hear about the Mexican context today, ask questions and fill out the waiver form. To provide an intimate and safe experience, groups are limited in size to about 16, traveling together in a van with your guides. Your fee includes transportation, lunch, expert guidance, tax and tips. You may tip the van driver.  Returning to the US, participants know that they have had a significant learning experience.

    What to wear and bring

    • Please remember to bring your passport!
    • While there is not a lot of walking, we suggest comfortable shoes. Men in Mexico do not generally wear shorts. Long pants or slacks are probably best for both men and women. No tank or halter tops or short shorts. You may want to bring a bottle of water and wear sunscreen.
    • You may want to bring money for purchasing snacks and souvenirs. US dollars are accepted or you can bring pesos. If you bring snacks with you or bring food back, fruit, veggies and meat are usually not allowed to come back with you over the border.  This is where you will need your passport.

    Waiver of Liability

    • When you arrive, you’ll be asked to complete a Waiver of Liability, if you have not already done so at the orientation meeting. A copy will be provided to you or you may wish to download and print from the link below.
    • Waiver-of-Liability-CBT.pdf

    iPhone Photography

Much of the time, the camera we have with us is our iPhone. It is good for snapshots, but can really take great pictures. This class will go over techniques for taking better photos using the features in the camera. It will also go over all of the editing tools built into the Photos app on your iPhone. There are also many third-party editing apps and cameras apps. The class will look at some of these and demonstrate how they work. This class will only deal with the iPhone, but the techniques for taking good photos can apply to any smartphone.
