Paul McCreary - April Speaker Series

Edward Sheriff Curtis led an amazing life, leaving behind a wondrous legacy of work. He photographed and chronicled 80 different native American tribe west of the Mississippi in the early 1900s. He assembled 20 books of his work with various tribes. His completed work was called the North American Indian. He was somewhat assisted by President Theodore Roosevelt and JP Morgan, among others.

Curtis’ obsession and mission left behind a great legacy, but ruined him physically, emotionally and economically. He died a broken man. The story is a tragic one, but left behind works that will live far into the future.

The presentation will feature his photographs and touch on his life experiences.

Paul McCreary grew up on an Illinois farm and got an undergraduate degree in art education. He taught art, emotionally impaired students, adults, and was a special education coordinator/TC in Michigan for 29 years, retiring in 1995.

He developed an interest in photography while in Michigan, and continued that as he retired to Indiana and moved to Colorado in 2001 with his wife where they owned and operated a B&B. He moved to Arizona part-time in 2006 and full time in 2014.
He teaches a variety of classes in Green Valley, including painting, and continues with photography and filmmaking. Through his interest in photography, he became aware of Edward Sheriff Curtis.
